Clarke explains Long absence

And boss provides update on Mulumbu's fitness after busy summer

STEVE Clarke has revealed Shane Long missed last night’s pre-season friendly with Hannover 96 due to a minor toe injury.

But the Baggies boss is hopeful the Ireland international will be fit to face Puskas FC Academy at FC Sopron's stadium on Monday (ko 6pm local time).

While he admits that game might come too soon for Youssouf Mulumbu, who only returned from a busy summer of international football in time for the Austria trip.

“Shane’s got a minor toe injury but hopefully he should be okay for Monday,” said Clarke.

“When he put the boot on it was compressing and it was sore.

“The biggest concern was infection so we’ve given him 48 hours for it to get better.

“He’s been looking good and sharp in training.”

He added: “Youssouf was at the game.

“He only joined up with us on Monday and wasn’t in for the medical testing at the start.

“He’s only had four training sessions and I’m not even sure if he’ll be involved on Monday – it might be too soon.

“Mind you, he looks fit, fitter than he was last year when he came back.”
