And full-back hopes to establish himself as Albion's first choice right-back
BILLY Jones has targeted a good run in this year’s Capital One Cup – ahead of tonight’s second-round tie with Newport County AFC at The Hawthorns (ko 8pm).
The former Preston and Crewe full-back has never gone beyond the third round of the competition during his ten-year career.
And Jones plans to make amends for his disappointing cup record this season.
“It’s big for us,” said Jones.
“The gaffer said as soon as he came here that it’s a good opportunity for us.
“Some managers swap players around and give too many players a rest.
“But he’s always said from the moment he walked through the door he wants to win a cup.
“That’s our aim again this year.
“My own record in cup competitions isn’t very good.
“I’m desperate for a good cup run.
“Ridgey and Ben have won this cup and they say how good an experience that is.
“We want do that as a group.
“Let’s see how far we can go.”
The 26-year-old has impressed in Albion’s opening two Barclays Premier League fixtures and hopes he can keep Steven Reid on the sidelines once he recovers from injury.
“When you play the first game of the season it’s your place to lose,” added Jones.
“Everyone knows that.
“We all know that if you get the pleasure of being selected in the first XI you’ve got to play well to keep your shirt.
“I’m no different to anyone else.
“The gaffer showed last year that he’s not afraid to make changes.
“There’s always going to be competition for places.
“I’m happy with how I’ve performed.
“I just want to keep improving year in, year out.”
