Clarke remains hopeful on duo

Boss provides update on Brunt and Reid injuries

STEVE Clarke remains hopeful Chris Brunt and Steven Reid are winning their race to be fit in time for the Barclays Premier League opener against Liverpool on Saturday week (ko 3pm).

Skipper Brunt yesterday took part in training for the first time since flying back from the Baggies’ pre-season tour of Scandanavia early with a calf problem.

And Reid could return to the practice pitch today as he battles back from a niggle that saw him miss Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday and last night’s 3-1 win at Walsall.

“Steven is still out and didn’t train with the group yesterday but I’m hopeful he will play a part today,” said Clarke.

“Chris trained with the group yesterday, which is good, so fingers crossed we will get to the start of the season with a fully fit group.

“That’s the aim. Everyone else is fine.”
