Phillips pens new contract at Albion

Matty Phillips has signed a new three-year deal with Albion to keep him contracted at The Hawthorns until 2022.

The news was revealed by a delighted Head Coach Slaven Bilić at Friday’s media sessions to preview Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship clash against Blackburn Rovers at The Hawthorns (3pm).

Phillips signed from QPR for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2016 and has become a key figure in the Baggies first-team plans.

His appearance against Reading in Albion’s previous home match was the 100th Baggies game in which he has featured, scoring 14 goals.

Bilić said: “It is great news.

“He has signed this season and another two years which is of course great news.

“He is useful to the Club. It shows that he is happy here and the player wants to put himself in a good situation. This is the proof that he thinks it is a good place to be and that’s why we are delighted.

“We didn’t have to convince him and it is always good to keep those major players in the Club.

“He very rarely is missing the sessions. He is a great pro, he looks after himself and stays after training. He is a great professional and a great asset on the pitch, he can change a game.

“He has those great moments and he has shown that already this season. He is a Premier League player. It’s all positive.”

The Baggies midfielder is the star interview in Saturday’s matchday Albion News in which he discusses in detail why he is so content with life at The Hawthorns.
