On this day in 1953...

The Throstles recorded their biggest ever win at Newcastle United on a famous afternoon when the Geordies were annihilated 7-3 by an Albion team at its absolute peak.

Johnnie Nicholls scored three, Ronnie Allen added two more and Frank Griffin and Paddy Ryan helped themselves as well to round out the scoring.

A crowd of 58,075 were there to witness it, the highest away crowd of the season. Ironically, the visit of Newcastle in round five of the FA Cup generated the best attendance at The Hawthorns, 61,088.

Only the FA Cup semi-final against Port Vale at Villa Park (67,977) and the final itself against Preston at Wembley (100,000) topped that figure.
