'Healthy competition' key to Albion success - J-Rod

JAY Rodriguez says the perfect balance of “competition” and “backing” is driving Albion’s free-scoring frontline to success.

The Baggies remain the Sky Bet Championship’s highest scorers after last night’s 2-1 win at Ipswich Town took Darren Moore’s men to second in the table ahead of Saturday’s fixtures.

J-Rod is now the Club’s joint-top goalscorer on nine with Dwight Gayle, while Harvey Barnes took his tally to seven at Portman Road. Matt Phillips has five, and Hal Robson-Kanu three, of Albion’s staggering 39 goals thus far.

And Jay says it’s great that he and his fellow attackers can be competitive while still enjoying each other’s success.

“There’s healthy competition,” he said. “We chat about it, I give Dwight a bit of grief and he gives me a bit. But with Hal, Matty, Harvey, with all the strikers, we all give each other a bit.

“It’s good competition and I’m equally as happy if any of the other lads score, as long as we are winning and progressing. That’s the main thing.

“You need that competition. You want to be doing better than everyone in the game. To have it where you know you have their backing as well is really important.

“We all have each others backs and everyone is happy for each other.”
