Youngsters take on 'Regis Challenge'

A CLUTCH of academy youngsters will tomorrow pay homage to Cyrille Regis in a special challenge.

Close to 5,000 Albion and Coventry City supporters have already booked their tickets for the inaugural Regis Shield clash at The Hawthorns - a pre-season finale which will also celebrate the great man's life and career.

And five Baggies starlets will have the unenviable task of stepping into Cyrille's boots and recreating one of his most iconic Albion moments - the 'Goal of the Season' against Norwich City in the 1981/82 season.

Finn Azaz, Rayhaan Tulloch, Zak Brown, Tyrese Dyce and George Harmon will take on the half-time challenge of bringing the ball down on their chest, turning for goal and - from a cone-marked spot outside the 'D' - attempt to smash home an unstoppable shot into the right-hand corner.

At least that's the plan. In reality it may not be quite so simple.

The one saving grace for our youngsters is that the goalkeeper won't be up to much. Baggie Bird will be between the sticks for the challenge.

Although the Fanzone won't be open before the game, fans are encouraged to get to the stadium early where tributes to Cyrille will be shown on the big screens prior to kick-off.

And make sure you stick around at full-time for the first unveiling of The Regis Shield.

Cyrille's children Robert and Michelle will be on hand to present the shield, crafted by lifelong Albion fan Dave Coley and designed by Julia Regis, to the winning side.

The Club has confirmed it will reserve a donation from the proceeds for a legacy trust which Cyrille's family will be establishing in his name and are planning to launch in the near future.

Tickets are priced £10 adults and £5 for disabled supporters and Under-18s.

The East and West Stands will be the home areas while the Smethwick End has been set aside for Coventry supporters.

Tickets are available online but will also be available on the day from the main Ticket office and the cash-only kiosks operating at the Woodman Corner and the Millennium Corner.
