Under-21s secure late derby victory at Villa

29 September 2015

Andre Wright on target for Baggies

ALBION’S Under-21 side recorded an identical scoreline against Villa to the one their senior counterparts secured at Villa Park less than two weeks ago.

Andre Wright grabbed the only goal of the derby clash with just five minutes left on the clock at the Banks’s Stadium, as the Baggies extended their unbeaten start to the season.

James Shan’s side started brightly and had several chances to take the lead, but Samir Nabi, Andre Wright, Joe Ward and Tyler Roberts were all unable to break the deadlock.

Villa, who named first-team players Jores Okore, Adama Traore and Libor Kozak in their starting line-up, had the ball in the net before half-time but Jordan Lyden’s goal was chalked off for offside.

Albion continued to dominate in the second-half and were producing some fluent and eye-catching attacking football.

However the visitors had to wait until the 85th minute to find a breakthrough.

Andre Wright – who is currently on loan at Kidderminster Harriers but also eligible to play for the Under-21s – tapped home from close range after Villa failed to clear.

It’s now 11 league games unbeaten for the youngsters, and Shan admitted that the result was a fair reflection of the 90 minutes.

He said: “I’m delighted for the boys, they were excellent and they fully deserved the three points.

“It was a fantastic performance with and without the ball.

“We started really brightly and caused them numerous problems.

“We had plenty of chances but their goalkeeper played really well and made some top saves.

“Villa had one spell where the momentum swung in their favour, but we coped with it really well and nullified their threat.”

Shan added: “The boys have a real focus on both their performances and the results this year, which is really pleasing to see.

“They take a lot of pride from being unbeaten and long may that continue.”

ALBION: Rose, Ezewele, McCourt, Field, Howkins, Donnellan, Roberts (Campbell 78), S. Nabi, Wright (Scrivens 87), Ward (Elbouzedi 62), Edwards.
