PREVIEW: Albion stars in international action

Host of players called up by nations

TEN Albion first-team players have been called up by their nations for September’s international fixtures.


Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Chris Brunt are with the Northern Ireland squad for their crucial Euro 2016 qualifying double-header.

Michael O’Neill’s side visit the Faroe Islands on Friday (ko 7.45pm) before facing Hungary in Belfast on Monday (ko 7.45pm).

Northern Ireland sit second in Group F after six games, one point behind leaders Romania and two clear of third-placed Hungary.


Midfield duo James Morrison and Darren Fletcher have been named in the Scotland squad for their vital Group D qualifiers against Georgia and Germany.

The Tartan Army travel to Tbilisi on Friday (ko 5pm) and then welcome the world champions to Hampden Park on Monday night (ko 7.45pm).

Gordon Strachan’s men lie third the group, three points adrift of Poland and two behind Germany.


In the same group as Scotland, James McClean and the Republic of Ireland have some catching up to do if they are going to qualify for next summer’s finals in France.

They will make the trip to face minnows Gibraltar on Friday night (ko 7.45pm) before hosting Georgia on Monday night (ko 7.45pm).

Ireland are four points off an automatic qualification spot with four games remaining.


James Chester is part of the Wales squad who will be looking to consolidate their position at the top of Group B.

Chris Coleman’s men are three points clear of Belgium and five clear of both Israel and Cyprus.

Wales travel to Nicosia for a clash against Cyprus on Thursday (ko 7.45pm), before facing Israel in Cardiff on Sunday afternoon (ko 5pm).


Record-signing Salomon Rondon is in the Venezuela squad for friendlies against Honduras on Friday (ko 11pm) and Panama on Tuesday (ko 11pm).

Both fixtures will be played in Puerto Ordaz, eastern Venezuela.


Cristian Gamboa will come up against two of world football’s best sides this weekend.

Costa Rica face Brazil in New Jersey on Saturday (ko 4pm) and then Uruguay in San Jose on Tuesday (ko 8pm).


Serge Gnabry is in the Germany Under-21 squad for their friendly with Denmark on Thursday (ko 5pm) and European Under-21 Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan on Tuesday (ko 3pm).
