Donnellan on target as Under-21s draw with Brighton

26 October 2015

Baggies extend unbeaten run to 13 games

ALBION’S Under-21 side extended their unbeaten run to 13 league games as they drew 1-1 with Brighton at The Lamb.

Shaun Donnellan was on target for the Baggies in the 63rd minute, but James Shan’s side were unable to hold out and claim all three points as Daniel Akindayini rescued a share of the spoils for the Seagulls late on.

The result gives the youngsters a three point lead over second-placed Arsenal, with a trip to North London to face the Gunners next up on Friday.

The visitors had the first chance in the 20th minute, Luke Chike Kandi volleying against the near post from a tight angle after meeting Dylan Barnett’s left-wing cross.

Andre Wright was the first Baggies player to try his luck, but the forward’s left-footed drive from 25-yards flashed past the far post as the clock reached the half-hour mark.

Wright went close again eight minutes later when he met Robbie McCourt’s cross from the left, however he was unable to keep his header down.

Just 60 seconds after that miss, Brighton wasted a great chance to open the scoring.

The Ball fell kindly at the feet of Jeffrey Monakana following Joe Ward’s cross, but the Seagulls winger blazed wide from 15-yards-out.

The final opportunity of the opening 45 minutes fell to Samir Nabi who unleashed a curling effort from 25-yards, however the ball landed inches wide of the far post.

The home side made a determined start to the second-half, and Jonathan Leko forced Christian Walton into a strong one-handed save with a shot from inside the penalty area after darting through the Brighton defence.

But the Baggies didn’t have to wait much longer for the opening goal.

Three minutes after the hour-mark, centre-back Shaun Donnellan rose highest to meet Kyle Edwards’ inch-perfect corner and powerfully head the ball home.

Yet Albion could only hold on to their lead for 14 minutes as Brighton snatched an equaliser on the break.

Daniel Akindayini raced clear after a long clearance and calmly placed the ball under Ethan Ross’ body to rescue a point for his side.
