Under-21s aim to go top at Newcastle

23 November 2015

Baggies remain unbeaten this season

ALBION’S unbeaten Under-21 side will go top of the Barclays U21 Premier League division two table – if only for a few hours - with a win at Newcastle this afternoon (ko 1pm).

James Shan’s side are one point and one place behind the leaders Derby, who travel to West Ham on Monday evening.

The Baggies head into the encounter in confident mood.

They last tasted defeat way back in March, while a Kyle Edwards goal away at Cardiff last week saw the group qualify for the last-16 of the Barclays U21 Premier League Cup.

The Baggies boss says his players take plenty of pride from the impressive run they are on, but admits the Magpies will be tough opposition.

“We are very much taking things game by game at the moment,” said Shan.

“As a team we take great pride from not suffering a defeat yet this season, and we want to ensure that run continues on Monday afternoon at Newcastle.

“We try to win every game, but the players know that if they can’t win, then their next objective is not to lose.

“The group are very confident at the moment.

“They are unbeaten and they are in the next round of the cup, which crucially adds games to what is a very short season at Under-21 level.

“Newcastle are a very good side and we have watched them a few times.

“They have had a few senior players in their line-up in recent matches, so if they do that again it will be a great test for the lads.

“I expect them to be brave on the ball and to try and control possession.

“We need to make sure we implement our own style on the game.”
