Baggies claim a share of the spoils

  • Albion goal: Reid go 50
  • West Ham goal: Zarate 17
  • Albion star man: Darren Fletcher
  • Attendance: 34,914 (1,141 Albion)
ALBION came back to add another precious Barclays Premier League point to the tally on their final scheduled visit to the Boleyn Ground.

Outplayed in the first half at the end of which they trailed to a brilliant Mauro Zarate free-kick, Rickie Lambert came off the bench to see his 50th-minute shot deflected past West Ham keeper Adrian by Winston Reid.

It was merited reward for a much-improved second-half display in a game Albion tackled without suspended Chris Brunt. Jonny Evans switched over to left-back to cover his absence.

A terrific 22-yard drive from Salomon Rondon, which flew a fraction wide of the right-hand angle, was Albion’s only effort of note in a first half which the Hammers controlled.

Zarate curved a magnificent 17th-minute free-kick from just outside the area beyond Boaz Myhill’s out-stretched fingertips, and the Baggies were let off when Cheikhou Kouyate headed wide from a free position and were grateful for Myhill’s diving save from a Manuel Lanzini drive.

But the game took on a different complexion after the break when Albion presented much more of an attacking threat.

Only the save of the game from Adrian in the 62nd minute prevented Rondon giving Albion the lead with a point-blank header, while in added time the tireless James McClean couldn’t quite take a chance created by Lambert and Myhill beat away an Aaron Cresswell free-kick.
