Redondo, the school team, smoked sausage supper & more
THIS week we caught up with our skipper, Darren Fletcher.
So, Darren, what is your favourite…?
Moment in football?
I honestly can’t pick one, I have been fortunate enough to experience plenty of great moments in football.
Goal you have ever scored?
Probably my first goal for Scotland against Lithuania in 2003 at Hampden Park. It was my first professional goal, it was my first game at Hampden and it also took us into the Euro 2004 play-offs so it was a special moment.
Goal you have ever seen?
Zinedine Zidane’s left-foot volley in the Champions League Final at Hampden Park when they beat Bayer Leverkusen.
Game that you have been involved in?
When I played for Manchester United, we beat Roma 7-1 at Old Trafford in the Champions League. I think I will go with that one.
Player of all time?
Football kit owned as a boy?
I had an Argentina one with Redondo on the back.
World Cup memory?
The opening game of the 1998 World Cup in France, when Scotland played against Brazil. It was the first time I watched Scotland play and I remember watching the opening ceremony. I even took the day off school to watch it all.
Childhood memory of football?
I always go back to my school team, just because of the comradery and the singing on the bus on the way back from games. You would be playing with your mates and against rival schools, so those are good memories of my childhood.
Probably going to Florida for the first time with my family. That was a pretty big deal. I would have been about 11 at the time so the perfect age to go there and go on all the rides.
Lesson at school?
I always enjoyed history. I was really interested in learning all about it.
I’m not a great animal lover so I’ll just go with the family dog back home in Scotland.
Smoked sausage supper from Scotland.
Sport other than football?
I didn’t really play it much, but basketball.
Person at the club to play a prank on?
Andrew Hussey (Head of Football Logistics). He would take the joke in completely the wrong way and get really angry, which would make it even funnier!
FIFA or Pro Evolution back in the day. I can’t claim to be the best, not anymore anyway. With having kids and a busy schedule I don’t get as much time to play. I would be competitive without being the best.
Piece of advice you have ever been given?
Never let anybody tell you that you can’t do something.
Thing to do to relax away from football?
I like playing golf when I get a spare moment or two.
The River, by Garth Brooks. My uncle told me to listen to it when I was going through tough times so it has that sentimental value to it.
Foreign football team?
And finally… your favourite moment in an Albion top?
Winning at Old Trafford.
