Albion captain ready for Old Trafford
NO sentiment, no favours - just three points for Albion.
That's the message from Darren Fletcher as he prepares to return to Manchester United for the first time since leaving for The Hawthorns in January.
Fletcher made more than 220 appearances for United during a 12-year senior spell with the club.
This evening the Albion skipper steps out onto the Old Trafford pitch for the first time since his departure.
The 31-year-old said: "I can't wait to return.
"I'm just hoping that I walk on the correct side, go into the right dressing room!
"But I'm going back with a job to do. For that 90 minutes I'll be wanting to beat Manchester United. That's the winner inside me.
"There will be no favours from me. I was desperate to beat Liverpool last week. I will want to win this game too.
"I've got a job to do. I had a fantastic time at United but now I'm at Albion and enjoying life here."
Tony Pulis is confident Fletcher will enjoy today's experience and won't be sucked in by the 'occasion'.
The Baggies head coach said: “I’ve not spoken to him about it, I’ll mention to him because you don’t want him to get too wrapped up in the occasion you want him to concentrate on the 90 minutes.
“Obviously he had a great time there, a wonderful, wonderful time there as an apprentice right the way through. He’s worked through the pomp of that football club with some great players.”
Pulis continued: “Darren is a strong character, resilient, forthright...he’s been fantastic, not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well.
“At the training ground, around the dressing rooms he’s been very good. It’s great credit to the system at Manchester United, the way they brought the young players up. They’ve done it the right way. That group of players have been wonderful."
