FA Cup triumph, Timpson Continentals, Ibiza and so much more
THIS week we put Albion legend Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown under the spotlight.
So, Tony, what is your favourite…?
Moment in football?
That would have to be walking up the Wembley steps to receive an FA Cup Winner’s medal in 1968.
Goal you have ever scored?
The one I scored against Sheffield Wednesday away in the FA Cup in 1970. I think technically it is the best goal I have scored, the ball dropped over my shoulder and I hit it on the half-volley from just outside the box and it flew into the corner.
Goal you have ever seen?
Jeff Astle’s goal in the FA Cup final in 1968. He scored the winner in a 1-0 victory.
Game that you have been involved in?
The 1966 League Cup Final second-leg against West Ham at The Hawthorns. We were 2-1 down from the first-leg, but we went out and within 20 minutes we were 4-0 up. We just absolutely destroyed West Ham.
Player of all time?
Denis Law. He was my hero, but the best player I ever saw live was George Best.
I think I will have to say Old Trafford.
Football kit owned as a boy?
I had a Real Madrid one which I liked.
Pair of boots?
Timpson Continentals! When I started there was a shop called Timpson shoe shop which used to sell football boots and I actually went and bought my own from there.
World Cup memory?
Obviously for me it was England winning the World Cup in 1966, it was a great occasion and it was fantastic to see your own nation win the World Cup.
Childhood memory of football?
Being selected to play for Manchester Boys as a young lad.
When I went to a fair in Wythenshawe Park in Manchester and I bumped into Bobby Charlton. As a young lad he was one of my heroes, so to see him at this fair, I was just absolutely gobsmacked.
Lesson at school?
I’m not a great lover of animals because I had asthma as a young lad and wasn’t allowed near animals. I do, however, think horses are brilliant creatures.
My favourite colour is red.
Lager and lime.
The wife’s beef stroganoff.
I don’t really have one to be honest.
Cadbury Dairy Milk Whole Nut.
It’s a Wonderful Life.
Sport other than football?
If I had to say one I’d say Golf. I don’t play, but I like watching.
Don’t be silly, I have never played a video game in my life!
Thing to do to relax away from football?
You might laugh but probably a bit of gardening. I think my wife has pushed me into it really but I do quite enjoy it.
Rolling stones – Under My Thumb.
Either The Kinks or Roy Orbison.
I’m not really into cars, but if I had to say one I would say a VW Golf.
Book or magazine?
Albion News! That’s the only book or magazine I ever read!
Foreign football team?
I’ve not really got one but if I had to say one I would go for Real Madrid.
And finally… your favourite moment in an Albion top?
I think making my debut at Ipswich back in 1963 would be my favourite.
