Fans' favourites discussing terms
ALBION fans are being urged to sit tight amid the summer speculation frenzy - as the Club offer deals to key duo.
The Baggies again find themselves linked to all manner of targets in the wake of Head Coach Tony Pulis’ admission that he is looking to make extensive changes for the 2015-16 campaign.
Albion have made their first moves by discussing new contracts with Gareth McAuley and Claudio Yacob.
But Richard Garlick, the Director of Football Administration who leads the club’s contract negotiations, is hoping supporters will not get swept up in the 'name game' of the close season’s transfer speculation.
“This is the quietest month on the football calendar,” says Garlick.
“We are being linked with, quite strongly in some cases, all manner of players from all corners of the globe and the stories are simply not true.
“What I can say is that we have spoken to the agents of Claudio and Gareth and we have now made our offers to them and I’m waiting a response.
“The stories build an expectation of business which the fans feed on and I don’t think that helps us in the long term.
“This time last year we were able to complete on the Craig Gardner deal because he was a free transfer and a great fit for us. We had nothing like that this time around.
“Tony has made it clear that he wants to shake things up so we are not resting on our laurels. But it is important for supporters to stay calm.”
Yacob and McAuley finished the season as first team regulars after having to settle for a place on the sidelines over the first months of the campaign.
The ever-popular McAuley is 35 and out of contract - but produced such a consistent campaign that Albion were happy to sit down and discuss a new deal.
The Baggies took up their option on Yacob which ties him to the club for another season. But the club have offered to extend his contract and are awaiting a response.
