Players up early to tackle Alps on bike
THE physically demanding schedule of Albion’s pre-season training week in the Austrian Alps showed no sign of slowing on day three.
The whole squad were again awoken by a 5:30am wake-up call and shortly after six they found themselves at the foot of the same hill that they had ran up on Friday.
Their task on Saturday morning was to complete the same circuit as they had done on foot the previous day, but this time by bike.
The players had to cycle up the steep and winding incline to various stations, where they would then return back down the hill ready to go again.
They would repeat this 16 times just as they did on Friday morning on foot, but again the distance was shortened every four reps.
The exercise inflicted a burning sensation in the players’ legs due to the unforgiving rise of the hill.
Upon completion, the group then had to cycle back up a steady hill to reach their hotel where they were quick to dive into the pool for a much needed cool down.
The second session of the day mirrored Friday’s middle session as the players headed for the gym.
The sports science staff put on a similar strength and conditioning circuit for the players, giving them balance, core body strength, weightlifting and stretching exercises to do.
‘Back on your bikes’ was the order from Tony Pulis in the evening as the Baggies boss instructed his team to cycle down to the training pitch, which is located four miles away from the hotel.
Pulis and his coaching staff put on an almost identical session to the one they delivered on Friday evening, with unopposed passing drills the main focus.
The session concluded with a quick possession based exercise before the group were back on their bikes and riding the four miles back to the hotel.
Despite the incredibly intense training sessions and early wake-up calls, the players are in good spirits and are working exceptionally hard.
