Northern Ireland international happy with pre-season efforts
CHRIS Brunt is eagerly anticipating the return of Barclays Premier League football, with Albion’s season opener against Manchester City now less than two weeks away.
The Baggies face Bristol Rovers on Friday night at the Memorial Stadium (ko 7.30pm), in what will be their final friendly before a return to competitive action on Monday, August 10.
Albion have enjoyed victories over Swindon and Walsall since landing back on British soil, after training camps in Austria and the USA.
The 30-year-old believes his team-mates are in good shape following a physically demanding pre-season schedule and says they are itching to get stuck into the new season.
“We can’t wait for that first game to come around,” said Brunt.
“Pre-season is one of those times that nobody really enjoys or particularly wants to do, but it is part of the job.
“The way football is now, there isn’t really much of a break anymore especially for the lads who play internationals.
“The lads all look after themselves, come back in good shape and are raring to go.
“It is all about getting our sharpness and making sure that we are ready to hit the ground running in the first game of the season, because Manchester City is going to be a difficult test.”
Brunt added: “We have played games in America and in Austria, but now that we are playing friendlies back in England it makes it seem like the start of the season is closer.
“We have had a few good results up to now in pre-season which will do us no harm.
“The matches give us a good feel of where we are at and the lads are looking pretty fit.
“There is so much at stake, especially this season in the Premier League so it is vitally important that we get ourselves off to a good start.”
