Under-21s held at Wolves

9 January 2015

Local derby ends in goalless draw

ALBION’S Under-21s missed the chance to go top of the Barclays U21 Premier League Division 2 table, after they were held to a goalless draw at Wolves.

The result leaves James Shan’s side one point behind leaders Newcastle United, but the Magpies have played two games less than The Baggies.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first-half and almost took the lead in the fourth minute through Eusebio Bancessi, but his attempt from inside the penalty area rattled into the side-netting.

Wolves’ forward Ibrahim Keita then volleyed wide from 10-yards-out after connecting with Ben O’Hanlon’s left-wing cross.

However the best chance of the half fell to Albion, Adil Nabi’s clever pass set Alex Jones through on goal but his weak effort was pushed around the post by Wolves’ ‘keeper Jonathan Flatt.

Shortly after the break, the home side wasted a glorious chance to take the lead when Keita missed the target from 8-yards-out with an open goal gaping.

The last fifteen minutes saw a flurry of chances as both sides began to tire – Wesley Atkinson’s volley from the edge of the penalty area flew inches wide of Flatt’s near post.

Wolves substitute Bradley Reid then saw his bullet header cannon back off the far post, before fellow replacement Donovan Wilson dragged his shot from inside the penalty area just wide as the hosts pushed for a winner.

The final chance of the game fell to Albion, but Tyler Roberts’ header from a central position in front of goal was straight at Flatt.

Albion: Palmer, Smart, Cleet, Atkinson, Garmston, Pace (Birch HT), Samir Nabi, Adil Nabi, Roofe, Leko (Wedderburn 70’), Jones (Roberts 60’).
Unused subs: Ross (GK), O’Sullivan.

Attendance: 965
