Albion head coach hails recent signing
TONY Pulis has revealed that his interest in Albion new boy Darren Fletcher stems back to his days as Crystal Palace boss.
Fletcher moved to The Hawthorns from Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window on Monday.
And Pulis claims he had been keen on taking the Scotland captain to south London during the close season.
The Throstles head coach claims he spoke to former Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson during his pursuit of the midfielder.
"I asked Sir Alex about Darren when I was at Palace at the beginning of the season,” he said.
"We were very keen to get him to the football club, not just because of his football ability. If you go and watch training and the way he projects himself he is an absolute first-class lad.
"You talk of ‘Father Figures’ and look at what Sir Alex Ferguson has done. We took Ryan Shawcross from Manchester United when he was 18 or 19 and Sir Alex has to take a lot of credit for this.
"The way Ryan has conducted himself over the years has been fantastic and is shows again with Darren - there’s that stamp there. They’ve been brought up the right way.
"Speak to people in the dressing room and he has only been here four or five days. He trains well, he looks after himself.
"Fletch will be good at the club. We neeed to give him time to settle in but he should be good for us."
Pulis continued: "First what Darren has to do is prove that he is a good player on the pitch. That starts on Sunday.
"We want him to not just be good around the place but when the whistle goes we want him to be a good player and a good leader on the pitch for us. That’s what we need.
"As a character he is first class."
