Day 19 of our Christmas Advent Calendar
An FA Cup semi-final at Highbury in 1978, Albion the favourites as we took on Ipswich Town.
The balance tipped irrevocably Ipswich’s way in the opening ten minutes, Brian Talbot’s diving header flashing into the roof of the net to give the Tractor Boys the lead.
More significantly, as he did so, his head cracked into the side of John Wile’s skull, slicing open a huge gaping wound that bled incessantly and would not be stopped.
Wile managed to play for most of the game, blood seeping through the bandages and pouring onto his shirt as he lost very nearly an armful of the stuff for the cause. And we still lost.
File under: Wouldn’t happen today.
