Day 18 of our Christmas Advent Calendar
The FA Cup final is a special beast. What else could stir such nerves as this?
Saturday, May 1, 1954, Albion 2-1 down to Preston and time running out. At the far end of Wembley Stadium, number 9, Ronnie Allen, is about to take a crucial penalty.
Nearest to us, goalkeeper Jim Sanders is so petrified, he can’t watch. That’s the same Jim Sanders that had spent a great chunk of World War Two on nerveless bombing missions for the RAF.
He needn’t have worried. In went the penalty, just, and the celestial “Team of the Century” went on to win the FA Cup.
