Day 14 of our Christmas Advent Calendar
When Jimmy Hagan was boss in the mid 1960s, if an Albion player was told, “You’re for the high jump” it had a sinister ring to it.
Under the gentler style of Alan Ashman in 1968, it was a statement of exultation, as demonstrated here by Tony Brown at Villa Park after his goal in the FA Cup semi-final has secured our place at Wembley.
Trying to emulate the leap, Albion youngster Ben Pogson couldn’t get quite as high. So how did Bomber do it?
“Adrenalin, simple as that” says the great man.
“If it had just been any goal, I couldn’t have done it either, but scoring in the FA Cup semi-final to take you to Wembley, that was special. I was ecstatic."
