Young squad secure point against Reds

MAX Melbourne was on target as a young Baggies Under-18 side held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The left back gave Albion the lead in the 11th minute when he fired past United ‘keeper Oliver Byrne from inside the penalty area at the second time of asking, after his initial shot had been saved.

But the Reds hit back just seven minutes later through Zach Dearnley, who rose highest at the back post to nod home DJ Buffonge’s corner.

Under-18 boss Aaron Danks was pleased with his side’s resilient display.

He said: “The boys competed really well against a good Manchester United team.

“Our performance was very good both in and out of possession and that was the most pleasing thing for me.

“We restricted them and managed to play some good football ourselves.”

ALBION: Hall, Wilson, Piggott, Barbir, Melbourne, Sweeney, Smith, R.Nabi, Bradley (Meredith 84), Dool (Harper 75), Soleman.

Unused subs: House, Soule.
