Samir's strike secures Under-21 win at Swansea

Young Baggies start season with three points

ALBION Under-21s started their Barclays U21 Premier League division two campaign with a 2-1 win at Swansea on Monday night.

Samir Nabi was the Baggies hero – netting the winner with just three minutes left on the clock at the Liberty Stadium.

His older brother, Adil, had spectacularly given the visitors an early lead with a precise free-kick from 30-yards.

The Swans hit back in the 21st minute through Ryan Hedges, who was able to turn inside the penalty area and slot a left-footed shot beyond the reach of Ethan Ross.

The opening day encounter looked to be heading for a draw, but Samir Nabi had other ideas.

The midfielder played a delicate one-two with Tyler Roberts on the edge of the area, before opening up his body to place the ball into the far corner and send his side home with all three points.

Under-21 boss James Shan was delighted to start the season with a victory.

He said: “We are obviously really pleased to start with a win, especially here against a very good team like Swansea.

“It was a really resilient performance from the boys and we probably just did enough to deserve the three points.

“It wasn’t our best performance in terms of in possession of the ball, but we gradually got better towards the latter stages of the game.

“The win here gives us a great platform to go and build from for the rest of the season.”
