Young Under-21 side to visit Stoke tonight

20 April 2015

A number of Under-18 players will get chance to impress

ALBION Under-21 boss James Shan has selected a young squad to face Stoke tonight at the Britannia Stadium in the Barclays U21 Premier League (ko 7pm).

Several of the club’s Under-18 players will be given a chance to impress after a successful season, which saw them qualify for the elite group play-offs.

The Baggies will be looking to halt a run of three consecutive defeats and rediscover their mid-season form where they were challenging at the top end of the table.

And Shan believes that it is now the right time to give the youngsters a chance to put themselves in his thoughts for next season.

He said: “We will go quite young against Stoke.

“The side will be largely our Under-21 group for next season.

“I think it is important that the second-year scholars start playing regularly at this level now, so that they are used to it when next season starts.

“We made a decision that if they train well with the Under-21 group then they will get opportunities to play in the team.

“The younger boys have trained well and will get a chance to play at Stoke.”

Albion claimed a 3-1 victory over the Potters in early November at the Ricoh Arena, but Shan is expecting a competitive game against a side who are unbeaten at home in the league since the turn of the year.

“I have seen them a few times this season and I have been impressed with them.

“They are a patient team who like to keep the ball but they aren’t afraid to mix it up either.

“I’m expecting a really competitive game.”

Admission is £3 adults and £1 concessions.
