'Blind Dave' completes Marathon des Sables

13 April 2015

Baggies fan creates history

ALBION Foundation Ambassador and Baggies fan ‘Blind Dave’ Heeley will this evening make a triumphant return to The Hawthorns after becoming the first blind person to finish the Marathon des Sables.

The 57-year-old ran 156 miles in six days across the Sahara Desert to complete what is commonly described as the ‘toughest footrace on Earth’.

Supporters are welcome to congregate around the Tony Brown statue ahead of Dave’s arrival at 5.30pm.

‘Blind Dave’ will then attend an invite-only homecoming reception in the East Stand’s Richardson Suite.

The run was the final leg of the Tri-Albion Challenge which has seen The Albion Foundation so far raise more than £55,000 for their disability projects.

A 16-man group kicked-off the challenge by cycling the ‘Baggies Baton’ from Southampton to The Hawthorns before passing it onto the club’s blind football team who walked it to every school in Sandwell.
