Under-21s held at Blackburn

Late penalty denies Albion victory

SAMIR Nabi and Tahvon Campbell were both on the scoresheet as Albion Under-21s were held to a 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers in the Barclays U21 Premier League.

The Baggies opened the scoring in the ninth minute through Nabi, the midfielder sliding the ball under Blackburn stopper Ryan Crump.

Forward Alex Jones almost doubled the away side’s lead after the break, but his shot cannoned back off the post after being set up by Adil Nabi.

Rovers then levelled the scores in the 67th minute, Yann Songo’o heading home Kellen Daly’s cross.

But Albion hit back instantly through Campbell, who had only been on the field for two minutes when he got round the back of the Blackburn defence before finding a gap to squeeze home his shot.

However Jimmy Shan’s side were left disappointed, as Jordan Preston earned the hosts a point from the penalty spot six minutes from time.

“As a group we are disappointed that we didn’t dominate the game as much as we should have done,” said Shan.

“We started really brightly in the first 25 minutes and we looked quite comfortable.

“We played some fantastic football at times during the game.

“The two goals that we scored were brilliant, and we had more chances to go on and kill the game.

“But we allowed Blackburn to get back into the match and we are disappointed with the way that we conceded the two goals.”
