But boss glad hard work preserved Premier League status
PEPE Mel admitted he was disappointed to finish the season on a flat note following Stoke’s last-gasp winner in today’s 2-1 defeat at The Hawthorns.
Barring a freak turn of events, the Baggies’ Barclays Premier League status was already secured for another season before kick-off.
But the Albion chief’s ambition to sign-off the campaign on a positive was scuppered by substitute Charlie Adam’s 87th-minute winner.
Stephane Sessegnon’s 56th-minute effort had earlier cancelled out Gareth McAuley’s 22nd-minute own goal.
The final-day reverse means the Baggies finish this term in 17th place, three points above the relegation zone.
“It’s a great disappointment to finish the season with three defeats,” said Mel.
“The result today was disappointing for the fans and the club.
“I arrived here on January 12 and there have been different problems.
“But altogether with the fans, players, technical staff, all the people working at West Brom, hard work every day has kept us in the Premier League.”
