And striker reveals Mel's part in equaliser
VICTOR Anichebe admits it was great to net a goal against his boyhood rivals but says it was more important to stamp his mark at The Hawthorns.
The former Everton striker grabbed a crucial 67th-minute equaliser as Albion earned a valuable point against the high-flying Reds.
The Nigeria international moved to Merseyside at the age of one before spending eight years as a professional at Goodison Park prior to his move to the Black Country in September.
Anichebe insists his loyalties now lie with the Baggies - but confesses it was still special to score against Liverpool.
"It's always nice to score but it makes it that extra bit sweeter against Liverpool," he said.
"I was at Everton for a long time and it was nice to help them today.
"Of course it means something but now it's more important to help West Brom.
"It was nice to help this team.
"The team fought well today.
"I had a feeling we would get a good result today after the teams around us did well yesterday.
"It was important we got a good result and it's important we take that into our next game."
The 25-year-old levelled after pouncing on a mislaid Kolo Toure pass before powering past Simon Mignolet.
Anichebe, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes when he scored, revealed Pepe Mel played a big part in the goal.
"I was surprised the ball fell to me but the manager said press them high," he added.
"Liverpool like to play the ball and they are always going to take chances.
"They are always confident they can play themselves out of trouble.
"We pressed high and fortunately the ball fell to me.
"At another time or in other situations I might not have been alert to it but the manager told us it was coming.
"He said press high as he had seen it happen earlier in the game.
"If you watch it back you will see.
"He thought they might give it to us.
"I got the ball off Kolo and tucked it away which is pleasing."
