Goals and game time boost first-team contenders

Albion beat Northampton Town 5-2 in behind closed doors match

BROWN Ideye scored twice as Albion defeated League Two side Northampton Town 5-2, in a behind closed doors friendly at the training ground this afternoon.

Kemar Roofe (2) and Adil Nabi were also on target in a game which saw seven of Alan Irvine’s first-team squad get valuable minutes under their belts, ahead of the busy Christmas schedule.

Boaz Myhill, Jason Davidson, Cristian Gamboa, Claudio Yacob, Sebastian Blanco and Silvestre Varela all started alongside Brown Ideye.

Albion took the lead after just 12 minutes when Silvestre Varela slid a delightful pass through the visitors’ defence into the path of Kemar Roofe, who gently lifted the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper.

Brown Ideye then doubled his side’s lead with a terrific individual goal, picking up the ball on the halfway line and running straight through Northampton’s back four and finishing with power.

However, the away side fought back and scored twice at the end of the first-half to go at half-time on level terms.

But it didn’t take Albion long to regain the lead, Sebastien Blanco played in Roofe who slotted the ball home just five minutes into the second-half.

Ideye then got his second shortly after the hour mark, benefitting from another Varela assist before finishing calmly into the bottom corner.

The Baggies wrapped up victory with just two minutes to go when Adil Nabi fired a stinging shot from 25-yards into the top left-hand corner.
