Club mark 125 years of league action

Founder members triumph over Potters in first outing

ON this day 125 years ago founder members Albion beat Stoke 2-0 to top the opening-day English Football League table.

Handsworth-born Joe Wilson fired the club’s maiden league goal before George ‘Spry’ Woodhall netted a second in front of 4,524 spectators at the Victoria Ground.

Despite big victories for Preston North End and Derby County, goal-average saw the Throstles sit pretty at the summit on the night of Saturday, September 8, 1888.

Albion went on to finish sixth in the inaugural season of league football – with North End crowned champions.
