Gera hoping history repeats itself

Midfielder receives timely fillip in fitness fight

ZOLTAN Gera has set his sights on again returning to action with a bang after receiving a timely reminder of his spectacular come back from injury at the start of this term.

The Hungary international scooped the Goal of the Season gong for his wonder strike in the 3-0 opening-day win against Liverpool, at the club’s End of Season Awards Dinner on Sunday.

His effort against the Reds came after an eight-month spell on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury.

It was also the Baggies’ first goal of the season and turned out to be the best – defining what has been a record-breaking Barclays Premier League campaign.

And it has brought back positive memories for Gera as he continues the long road back to fitness from the anterior cruciate ligament knee injury that ended his season in January.

“It was a perfect start to the season - it seems a long time ago now,” he said.

“For me it was excellent because I’d been out for a long, long time.

“I came back in the first game and couldn’t imagine a better one.

“So, I’m quite happy with that goal and hopefully when I come back again I can score another one.

“I’m getting better and hopefully I can play again at the start of next season and avoid any more injuries.”

Gera has made 18 appearances this term, scoring four vital goals, with his strikes against Liverpool, QPR, Sunderland and Norwich all helping to secure Barclays Premier League wins.

And he admits he is immensely proud to have played a part in eighth-placed Albion’s success this term.

“I’m so proud of the team this season,” he added.

“It’s been a great season so far.

“We’ve never been in a better position in the Premier League - and I’m very proud.”
