Mantom completes Walsall switch

Youngster seals permanent move and Gayle rejoins Shrews on loan

SAM Mantom has today completed a permanent move to Walsall for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old midfielder has penned an 18-month contract after last week finishing his second loan spell at the Bescot Stadium, playing 11 games for the 14th-placed League One outfit.

He has found first-team chances hard to come by at The Hawthorns and last season joined up with the Saddlers for the first time, scoring three goals in 13 appearances to help them steer clear of relegation.

Albion Sporting & Technical Director (designate) Richard Garlick said: “Sam has been a great servant to the club since joining us as a youngster.

“He has progressed well during his time with us and is thoroughly professional in everything he does.

“Unfortunately, due to the club’s success in recent years, it has been difficult for him to break into the first team.

“This is a good move for him and we wish Sam all the best in his future career.”

Stourbridge-born Mantom joined the Baggies at Under-12s level and progressed through the Academy.

He signed his first pro contract in May 2010 and later that month linked up with newly-promoted Icelandic top-flight side Haukar on loan for a month.

He made his senior debut for Albion in their Carling Cup second-round 2-0 win at Leyton Orient the following August and walked away with the man-of-the-match honours.

Mantom also enjoyed successful loan spells at League One outfits Tranmere and Oldham during the 2010/11 campaign.

In total, Mantom made one start, plus two substitute appearances, for the Baggies.

Cameron Gayle has rejoined Shrewsbury on a youth loan until the end of the season.

The Baggies have the right to recall the defender after 28 days.

Gayle has made five appearances for the 17th-placed Shrews in League One this term.
