STAT PACK: Can Baggies bring goals home?

Facts and figures for New Year's Day clash with the Magpies

WITH three successive draws, Albion have turned things round to some extent of late as they look for a New Year’s Day win against Newcastle (ko 3pm).

Here, the guys at football statistics website WhoScored.com crunch the numbers ahead of the clash.

Once again for this Albion team, scoring goals was not the issue at Upton Park on Saturday. The Baggies hit three past a determined and usually solid Hammers backline.

In doing so they are one of only six visiting Barclays Premier League teams to manage to score at all on West Ham soil this season, and also followed in the footsteps of Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea in netting three goals there.

Saido Berahino was again impressive up front and went close to winning it late on, exhibiting his incredible technical ability with a sumptuously-hit free-kick that rattled the woodwork as the game entered its final ten minutes.

Albion now host a Magpies side who have performed way above expectations this season, and are currently occupying the eighth place the Baggies finished in last term.

Despite recent form, this Albion side are certainly capable of performing to that level, and this game will be a tight affair.

The Baggies have the slight edge in recent meetings between the teams at The Hawthorns, winning two and drawing two of the last five.

Goals have been a consistent feature, with both teams scoring in each of the last 12 clashes, and a total of 47 netted - that's an average of 3.9 per game.

With the attacking talent at Albion's disposal at present, more goals should certainly be expected this time around.
