Olsson: Hats off to Daniels

Defender impressed by debutant

JONAS Olsson heaped praise on debutant Luke Daniels after the keeper impressed as a substitute during today’s 0-0 draw at Everton.

The 25-year-old featured as a 77th-minute replacement for Ben Foster – who limped from the field with a foot injury.

Daniels joined the club in July 2004 but has found first-team opportunities difficult to come by – despite impressing during loan spells at Shrewsbury and Tranmere.

And Olsson, who could only watch as Daniels turned Seamus Coleman’s goalbound effort around the post in the dying moments, insists the academy product was not overawed.

“Luke came in at what I would think is a nervous time in the game for a goalkeeper,” said Olsson.

“It was his debut as well after quite a long time at the club.

“I take my hat off to him.

“He came on and played a great 20 minutes.

“Well done him.”

The Sweden international was delighted to come away from Goodison Park with Albion’s first point of the Barclays Premier League campaign.

“A point at Everton is a good one,” added Olsson.

“They probably had more clear-cut chances than we did, but we dug in.

“We spoke before the game about getting on with the season and getting some points on the board.

“Our shape in the first two games has been good and that should offer us some stability.”
