Ben: Claudio's nailed place down

Keeper says Baggies missed Argentina ace against Newcastle

BEN Foster says the fierce competition for places at The Hawthorns means no-one’s place in the team is safe – but insists Claudio Yacob is an exception to that rule.

The Argentina international’s ever-present Barclays Premier League record came to an end against Newcastle on Sunday due to injury.

And Foster reckons the Baggies missed the tenacious midfielder in Sunday’s undeserved 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

“We’ve got competition all over the pitch,” said the Albion No.1.

“There’s not one position that’s guaranteed and that’s fantastic for the team because you know if you’re not performing at 100 per cent there is somebody waiting to take the position off you.

“That means everybody raises the standards even more.

“I have said there is nobody who can be guaranteed first-team football but that is probably apart from Claudio.

“I don’t think you can cover Claudio because he has been absolutely immense.

“He has been so immense for us so we did miss him but the lads that came in did well.

“Zoltan was absolutely amazing. Some of the balls he was sticking in the box were really good and he set the goal up really well.

“Every time somebody does get injured or loses form there is somebody there to take their place.

“And we get on so well as a team, we’ve got a great team spirit, and whenever we score goals everybody is all over everybody else.

“That’s nice to see, the fans appreciate it, and it’s down to the people we bring in.

“The gaffer knows what kind of people he’s bringing in and who is going to mix well into the team.

“He knows what he’s doing.”
