Reid: Billy's hitting the right notes

Senior pro full of praise for his main rival to the Baggies' right-back slot

STEVEN Reid believes his main rival for the Baggies’ right-back slot - Billy Jones - is blossoming into a top Barclays Premier League performer.

The former Blackburn and Millwall star missed Sunday’s goalless draw with West Ham due to injury, while 25-year-old Jones earned praise from Albion boss Steve Clarke for his display against the Hammers.

And, although former Preston ace Jones is only in his second English top-flight season, Reid, who is six years his senior, says he has risen to the challenge.

“Billy’s been first class this season when he’s played, especially during the four-game winning run we had, he was on top form,” he said.

“We get on well, he’s come from the lower leagues like me and we have a great relationship.

“I’ve been fully impressed with how he’s done – last season when he got his chance - and kicking on again this season.

“He’s been in great form.

“He’s taken to Premier League life with ease really.

“He’s a good solid player and a great lad as well.

“He’s got the right blend and is doing really well.

“I don’t think he needs too much advice from me to be honest in what he’s doing.

“He’s doing great as he is.

“But obviously, I’m there for any of the younger lads if they ever want any advice or a chat about anything.”
