Late blow for Albion Women

30 April 2018

Albion suffered late heartbreak after being beaten 2-1 at home to Derby County Ladies in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division on Sunday.

The Baggies now face an anxious wait with both Guiseley and Wolves having played less games meaning survival is no longer in Albion’s hands.

In a tense first half Natalie Murray looped a header over the bar for the Baggies, yet it was Derby who broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark through a stunning volley from Andrea Bell.

Bell could have put the visitors further ahead moments after half-time, but fired wide from an acute angle, while at the other end Murray’s clever chip from a Nicole Dale cross clipped the top of the bar.

But Murray was not to be denied in the 70th minute picking up a delightful pass from Dale to stroke the ball past Sarah Morgan giving the Baggies a vital equaliser.

Despite an Albion onslaught though, the second goal never came - instead conceding a penalty in stoppage time which Bell duly converted to give Derby all three points.

Albion play their final fixture of the season away to Fylde Ladies FC on Sunday, 20th May in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division. (ko 2pm).

ALBION: Kinnerley, Finch, George, Merritt, Burton (c), Smith (Finn 69), Murray, Fellows, James (L.Price 46), Kikomeko (Seivwright 90), Dale.
