Martinez making progress ahead of Norwich trip

17 October 2019

Pablo Martinez says he is learning lots from playing alongside a talented group of teammates - who will take on Norwich in a Premier League 2 Division Two clash at the Colney Training Centre on Friday night (ko 7pm).

The young defender paid tribute to the strength of Albion’s PL2 side this term and claimed he is developing from playing with such a skilled batch of players, who are currently seventh in the league with a game in hand on the teams above them.

And Pablo says he is relishing every opportunity he gets to gain experience from some of the more senior players around him.

“I think the last couple of weeks have been great,” he said.

“We have been developing as a team. There has been more of a consistent line-up and we know each others strengths and weaknesses much better now so we play together better.

“I have been concentrating on the basics of defending; heading, clearing the ball, one v ones. I think playing and training with players like Fitzy and with other first-team players who have dropped down, I am learning bits and defending against very good players so I think my defending basics have really improved.

“People sometimes say with players dropping down from the first-team with injury disrupts the flow of things. But for us it’s great because we learn things from them and when they leave you can see the improvement. When they go back to the first team after their injury or time with us we do take in their advice and it does really help us.

“I think my development has been going well this season. At the start of the season I wasn’t really playing and now I have started to get some minutes. I think that is due to the fact I have been developing. I have been really enjoying it and trying to improve every day.

“Fitzy has played in League One and it’s great to have someone so experienced next to me. Any little bit of advice I can take from him I try and digest it and take every bit I can on board so it is great.

“I think it will be a competitive game against Norwich. We have focused a lot on ourselves more than the opposition which is good because we can only control what we do. I think we are expecting a competitive and quick game. It should be good.”

Norwich PL2 2 Albion PL2 4

18 October 2019

Albion’s PL2 side put in a dominant performance to take the points from an exciting six-goal encounter in Norfolk.

Nick Clayton-Phillips fired in a brace to put the Baggies two goals ahead, with Rayhaan Tulloch stretching Albion’s advantage shortly after the break.

Goals from Gassan Ahadme and Patrick Roberts gave the Canaries a lifeline, but a late Stanley Asomugha strike secured the spoils for the Throstles.

Albion took the lead after the half-hour mark. Chris Willock cut inside and smashed an effort goalwards, with Archie Mair in the Norwich net pushing the ball into Clayton-Phillips’ path who tucked the rebound into the net with ease.

Shortly after the break, the Baggies went further ahead. Willock whipped a ball into the box and Clayton-Phillips hit a controlled volley which found the corner of the goal.

Albion added to their lead moments later. Azaz hit a long-range pass into the path of Jamie Soule. The Baggies forward controlled the ball and played a pass to Tulloch, who side-footed in a neat strike to score.

Norwich pulled a goal back as Ahadme tapped in a Philip Heise cross, and then the home side netted again through Roberts.

Despite the Canaries threatening to complete the comeback, the Baggies held strong and with five minutes to play Asomugha hit a low strike to secure the victory for the visitors.

ALBION: House; Meredith, Fitzwater, Martinez, Harmon; Harper, Azaz (Wilding 69); Clayton-Phillips, Tulloch (Brown 85), Willock; Soule (Asomugha 73).

Substitutes: Boruc, Shotton.
