Meredith prepared for Manchester United PL2 clash

8 December 2019

Dan Meredith says Albion’s PL2 side know what they must do to give themselves the best chance of getting a result against Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village on Monday (ko 7pm).

Despite a 5-0 loss to the Red Devils on the opening day of the season, the Baggies are currently third in the Premier League 2 Division Two table, while Manchester United are in second place.

“We’re expecting the same again but we have just got to be better,” said Meredith.

“I think we have come along way since the first day of the season. We know what to expect, they have got a lot of good young players. They are a good footballing team and will play a lot of good football.

“We have got to be resilient and we know we can score goals so it is just about if we do get chances we need to finish them off.

“We don’t want a repeat of the first game against Man United. That will be in the back of our minds. We have got to make it right now. If we can get a result it will be very, very good for our season because they have shown how good they are.

“I think since the opening day we have really put in some good performances and got some really good results and I think the table shows that. It’s been exciting and we’ve been enjoying it.

“Man United last time was a tough game for me personally. It was against some good players but I think since then it has been good. I have put in some good performances and I have been enjoying with the first-team players dropping down, it has improved my performances so it’s been good.

“It makes it a lot easier playing with good players. It makes your job a lot easier when you have got people like Fitzy talking behind you. It makes life easier and I’ve put in better performances because he is behind me. He has got experience and knows what he is doing so he can lead what I am doing as well. It makes it a lot easier.”

Man United PL2 3 Albion PL2 1

9 December 2019

Albion Under-23s’ seven game unbeaten run came to an end as they lost 3-1 to Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village.

Despite taking the lead through Jamie Soule and creating several chances throughout the game - including having a penalty saved, the Baggies fell to defeat in the Premier League 2 Division Two.

Chris Brunt and Dara O’Shea gained game time, adding experience to the spine of the team.

Soule opened the scoring for the Baggies early on. Chris Willock played a ball out wide to George Harmon who hit a low cross, which Soule tapped in from close range.

Despite the hosts having lots of early possession, Albion could have stretched their advantage. Soule fired over from inside the box, while a last-ditch tackle prevented Rekeem Harper poking the visitors further ahead.

After the break the hosts levelled. A clearance from a United corner landed at Large Ramazani’s feet in the box and he hit a shot into the corner of the net.

Willock then won a penalty when Ramazani brought him down in the box, but his resulting spot-kick was saved by Matěj Kovář, who dived to his bottom right.

Then, the hosts took the lead when D’Marni Mellor blocked a Brad House kick - incidentally turning it into the Albion net.

Harper and Tulloch both went close to levelling the scoring for the Baggies, but with time running out Angel Gomes completed a tidy move to secure the win for the Red Devils.

ALBION: House; Meredith (White 85), Fitzwater, O’Shea, Harmon; Harper, Brunt; Willock, Azaz, Tulloch; Soule (Clayton-Phillips 52).

Substitutes: Boruc, Dyce, Solanke.
