Harmon hoping to learn lots from Appy

19 August 2019

George Harmon says he is enjoying life in the Under-23s under Michael Appleton’s high standards and intends to capitalise on the opportunity to play under such an experienced manager.

The young Baggies were beaten on their first outing of the season against Manchester United, but the defender is hopeful his teammates will be able to bounce back with a good showing at Fulham on Monday (ko 7pm).

And Harmon is also keen to learn from the new Baggies PL2 boss, who took over at the start of August.

“He’s been good with me,” said George.

“He has been helping me with my defensive work, getting me into different positions, helping me tactically where I should be on the pitch, so it’s really good for me personally and I’m sure it’s the same for everyone else.”

“It’s been good. He is setting high standards for everyone and he is very driven to make us all better and hopefully as a team we can move forward together and get some results throughout the season.

“Hopefully we can see a good performance against Fulham off the back of the Man United game.

“We do have some good players and as a team collectively we are better than what we showed against Man United and hopefully that will show on Monday.

“It wasn’t the start we wanted to make but we have got to reflect on the game and hopefully move on. I think there were a lot of things we needed to work on coming into this season and I think it was just a disappointing result and not the one that everyone wanted.

“There’s been different changes but we have all stuck together and we have got a good togetherness and we want to make sure that shows in our performances on the pitch as well."

Fulham PL2 1 Albion PL2 3

19 August 2019

Albion Under-23s beat Fulham 3-1 in a Premier League 2 Division Two game at Motspur Park to secure Michael Appleton his first three points since taking charge.

The young Baggies raced into an early lead when Jamie Soule won the ball deep in the opposition half and gave it to Rayhaan Tulloch, who made no mistake in finishing well past Magnus Norman.

Brad House had to be at his best to keep his side in front as Fulham immediately pressed for an equaliser, but instead it was Albion that further extended their advantage - this time Nick Clayton-Phillips curling superbly into the bottom corner on 25 minutes.

The home team managed to pull a goal back just before the break through Josh Onomah’s deflected free-kick and they continued to press after half-time, Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Jerome Opoku guiding efforts wide as they searched for a leveller.

A quick break for floodlight failure came just after the hour mark and from then on it was the Baggies who created the better chances.

Chris Willock, getting his first minutes in an Albion shirt since joining on loan from Benfica, side-footed past the post and Soule hit the woodwork before the forward’s hard work was rewarded with a goal with less than 10 minutes remaining.

House then made another fantastic save during seven minutes of stoppage time to ensure it stayed at 3-1 and the youngsters picked up their first win of the campaign.

ALBION: House, Meredith (White 82), Fitzwater, Melbourne, Harmon; Wilding (Taylor 90), Azaz; Clayton-Phillips, Tulloch (Solanke 85), Willock; Soule.

Substitues: Cann, Asomugha.
