‘I’m looking for us to be more clinical’ - Smith

2 September 2018

ALBION’s under-23s play their final Premier League 2 Division Two game before the international break on Monday evening when they head up to Sunderland.

The young Baggies will be looking for their first win of the new campaign at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground, with manager Jamie Smith believing more of a potency in front of goal will be the key to his side claiming a maiden three points.

“I’m looking for us to be more clinical,” explained Smith.

“Last time out against Norwich we had opportunities, we worked out that we had 11 shots on target but just weren’t clinical or ruthless enough - but they were and they ended up with the result.

“If you have 11 shots on target you’d expect to score at least a few, and ultimately in both penalty areas is where games are won and lost in the main. We know we’ve got to be better from that point of view.

“In fairness to the lads, they’re a really good bunch. I enjoy working with them, they’re enthusiastic and their work ethic is fantastic.

“Again, it’s about transferring that out onto the pitch on a match day and if they can do that then they’ll pick up results.

“It’s a long trip on Monday, but one we’re looking forward to and hoping we can come back from with a result.

“Sunderland will be hard-working and we’ll have to match that.”

Sunderland PL2 2 Albion PL2 1

3 September 2018

KYLE Edwards was again on the scoresheet but couldn’t prevent Albion’s PL2 side from a narrow defeat at Sunderland.

Conor Townsend, Tyrone Mears, Jonathan Leko and Edwards all got 90 minutes under their belt at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground as the Baggies lost 2-1 despite dominating much of the game.

Jamie Smith’s side went close to opening the scoring inside a minute when Edwards’ dink clipped the post.

But it was Sunderland who went in front on 23 minutes when Luke Molyneux latched onto a defensive error and finished cooly past Brad House, and it stayed that way until the break.

Albion were much improved in the second half and, after Nick Clayton-Phillips’ powerful shot was tipped over, had a strong shout for a penalty when captain Sam Wilding looked to be brought down inside the area.

With 65 minutes on the clock the Baggies found an equaliser when Edwards managed to get on the end of a poor back-pass to poke the ball past Anthony Patterson and then slot the ball home.

Sunderland responded immediately, though, and re-established their advantage through substitute Jack Diamond just two minutes later.

Albion threw everything at the home side in the remaining 20 minutes but struggled to create any real clear-cut chances and find a leveller.

ALBION: House, Mears, Howkins, Healy, Townsend; Wilding, Azaz; Clayton-Phillips, Edwards, Leko; Morton (Soule 86).

Substitutes: Griffiths, Meredith, Harmon, Brown.
