Smith previews Man United showdown

22 November 2018

JAMIE Smith says his under-23s are looking forward to taking on Manchester United at The Hawthorns in a Premier League 2 Division Two clash this Friday (ko 7pm).

The young Baggies had a difficult spell before the international break, enduring four successive narrow defeats in all competitions, but the PL2 boss is hopeful his side can re-find their form when the Red Devils come to town.

“It’s an exciting occasion,” said Jamie.

“These experiences for the boys of playing games at big stadiums is great for their development and hopefully we can go and get the victory.

“We had a difficult start to the season in terms of results but performances, as I kept saying, were good.

“We then went on a really good run, where the performances were still good, and now we’re back on a tough streak but the performances have still been there.

“In all the games that we’ve played we have only been beaten by the odd goal, and we’ve had some tough games, particularly in the Checkatrade Trophy.

“But again, they have been great experiences for the lads and as previously when we went through the losing run, it’s about the performances and keeping the consistency because the results will change."

Smith’s side will be playing at the same time as Albion’s first-team take to the field at Ipswich, something he admits will be a little bit weird.

“It’s going to be slightly strange,” added Jamie.

“We’d rather play before or after so that we can watch them, but hopefully we’ll catch the second half after a positive performance!”

Tickets for the fixture are available on the gate for £5 adults and £1 concessions, or entry is free if you're an Albion season-ticket holder.

Albion PL2 1 Manchester United PL2 1

23 November 2018

ALBION’s under-23s played out an entertaining 1-1 Premier League 2 Division Two draw with Manchester United on a foggy evening at The Hawthorns.

Jonathan Leko created the opening chance for the young Baggies inside 13 minutes when he fired over, before Oliver Burke then saw his shot saved by Matej Kovar following a good run.

The Red Devils grew into the game after that and were denied the lead on 34 minutes as Alex Palmer produced a fantastic save to keep Ethan Hamilton’s powerful close-range effort out.

Their momentum continued into the early parts of the second-half, Callum Whelan nearly netting with a flick that came back off the crossbar.

Albion struck the woodwork themselves just past the hour mark through Kyle Edwards’ volley - but they didn't have to wait long to go ahead because, on 69 minutes, Dan Meredith nodded home George Harmon’s deep cross.

Jamie Smith’s side held onto their advantage right up until the 87th minute when United were awarded a penalty, with substitute Josh Bohui sending Palmer the wrong way to equalise.

The Baggies rallied, though, and pushed to try and find the goal that would earn them all three points as the game went into stoppage time, George Harmon going particularly close when his free-kick was brilliantly saved.

Morton looked to have been brought down in the box with just seconds remaining, but despite strong Albion shouts the referee wasn’t interested and the points were shared.

ALBION: Palmer, Ferguson, Howkins, Healy; Meredith, Field, Azaz, Harmon; Edwards, Burke (Morton 45), Leko (Clayton-Phillips 70).

Substitutes: Keranovic, Ashton, Rogers.
