Smith predicts fluid football ahead of Fulham clash

11 March 2019

Albion Under-23s boss Jamie Smith is anticipating an exciting end-to-end match when his young Baggies take on Fulham Under-23s in the Premier League 2 Division Two on Monday night (ko 7pm).

The fixture at Aggborough gives Albion the chance to gain further ground on the visitors, with Fulham currently three points behind Smith's side in the league table.

But Jamie has prepared his youngsters for an offensive Fulham side, in the knowledge that the Baggies will have to be stubborn in their defensive duties to see off the challenge of their opponents.

"We're expecting a very open attacking game," said Smith.

"The game we played at Fulham was an exciting game with both teams looking to create. Fulham always have some very good individuals who can create so we will have to be aware defensively.

"With the first team playing on Wednesday, I'm anticipating a similar squad to last week.

"Hopefully we have been able to manage the players training this week. A full week has given us the opportunity to get out in the grass and get some work done so hopefully we will see the benefits in the game."

Jamie also reflected on last week's 4-1 loss at Stoke City, with the Baggies putting in an impressive second half performance after trailing by three at the break.

"I thought first half we were a little bit overawed with the team and players that Stoke had out," said Smith.

"We didn't do ourselves justice and show what good players that we have, but in the second half we had that belief and dominated, creating some good chances."

Albion Under-23s played out a stalemate at Aggborough Stadium against Fulham Under-23s in the Premier League 2 Division Two.

The visitors went close twice early on, and the Baggies also had a chance to break the deadlock after a Morgan Rogers free-kick hit the wall, allowing Albion to recycle the ball, with Samuel Wilding firing a volley from the edge of the box just over the bar.

Albion 'keeper Brad House had to be at his best to keep the Cottagers out, saving a Nicholas Santos Clause penalty after Jayden Harris was felled by Nathan Ferguson.

After the break, the Baggies nearly put themselves into the lead when Wilding rounded George Wickens, but the Albion midfielder's shot hit the side-netting.

Albion had claims for a penalty waved away when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box after Stanley Asomugha was brought down by Wickens. However, Fulham's 'keeper was booked and Albion were awarded a free-kick - which Rogers fired into the arms of Wickens.

The Baggies pushed forward again; Max Melbourne burst past a host of Fulham defenders before his powerful low drive was turned wide for a corner.

Fulham also had opportunites, with Jerome Opoku heading over from a corner and Sonny Hilton hitting a shot from distance to try and open the scoring.

ALBION: House; Ferguson, Solanke, Melbourne; Gardner-Hickman, Azaz, Wilding (Barry 90), Harmon; Rogers; Tulloch, Asomugha (Soule 65).

Substitutes: Pryzbek, Delaney, Brown.
