Albion PL2 1 Newcastle PL2 1

13 August 2018

ALBION began their new Premier League 2 Division Two campaign with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.

The young Baggies started the game well and went in front on nine minutes when Nick Clayton-Phillips’ cross looked to be turned in by Newcastle defender Stefan O'Connor.

Jamie Smith’s men were good value for their lead as they constantly strung impressive spells of passing together and unsettled the opposition with their pressing.

Dan Meredith’s powerful shot from outside the area, that stung the palms of goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, was the closest Albion came to extending their advantage before half-time.

After the break it was Newcastle that came out of the traps quickly, and they managed to draw level within three second-half minutes thanks to Callum Roberts’ close-range effort.

The away side looked to have stolen all three points with just over quarter of an hour to go when Elias Sorensen found space inside the box, but his strike was superbly saved by Baggies goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Albion could have won it at the end when Nathan Ferguson latched onto a corner from the left, though he couldn’t direct his header and it went straight into the palms of Woodman.

ALBION: Palmer, Harmon (Dyce 86), Healy, Ferguson, Meredith; Soule (Tulloch 67), Wilding, Brown, Azaz, Clayton-Phillips; Morton.

Substitutes: House, Rogers, Trialist.
