Charlton v Albion match preview

10 January 2020

Albion will take on Charlton for the second time this week when the two sides go head-to-head with each other in the Sky Bet Championship at The Valley on Saturday (ko 3pm).

Charlton

Their last outing

In their most recent league game the Addicks fell to a 1-0 defeat at Swansea City's Liberty Stadium.

Former Albion Academy product Yan Dhanda's goal in the opening 15 minutes for the hosts proved to be the difference between the two sides as Charlton suffered a seventh league defeat on the road this season.

CHARLTON: Phillips; Matthews, Lockyer, Pearce, Purrington (Sarr 87); Pratley, Dempsey, Morgan (Vennings 71), Gallagher; Davison, Taylor (Doughty 45).

Substitutes: Oshilaja, Ledley, Solly, Maynard-Brewer.

In the dugout

After rising through the youth ranks at Charlton, Lee Bowyer went on to enjoy an impressive playing career before taking charge at The Valley in March 2018 - 24 years after he made his senior debut for the club in 1994.

In his first campaign as Addicks boss, Bowyer guided Charlton to promotion via the League One Play-Offs after finishing third in the table.

In the summer, Bowyer signed Baggies duo Sam Field and Jonathan Leko on season-long loans to help his team tackle the higher demands of the Championship.

One to watch

Highly-rated Conor Gallagher joined the Addicks on loan from Chelsea in the summer, and has played 25 games for Charlton scoring six goals.

Lee Bowyer has been impressed with Gallagher, and recently said: “The kid’s doing so well, I don’t know how much more I can praise him.

“It’s not just what he brings in possession, his work-rate, he’s everywhere. He’s literally everywhere. He just does not stop working for the team and we’re lucky to have him. He’s a great player and Chelsea have got a good one there.”

Our last league meeting

Ten-man Albion were denied by a contentious 94th-minute penalty as they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw against Charlton Athletic at The Hawthorns the last time the two teams met.

Matt Phillips fired the Baggies in front from close range after just 10 minutes, yet Macauley Bonne headed an equaliser on the hour mark.

Nathan Ferguson saw red in the 67th minute for a challenge on Chris Solly, but Baggies substitute Hal Robson-Kanu looked to have curled home an 81st-minute winner - only for Josh Cullen to slot home from the spot in injury time.

Our man to watch

Semi Ajayi managed to net his fourth goal of the campaign in Albion's last league game against Leeds.

After signing from Rotherham United in the summer, Semi has been a rock at the back for the Baggies, playing in every league game so far this season.

Match Reports

Charlton Athletic 2 Albion 2

11 January 2020

Albion were held to a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic in a ferocious Sky Bet Championship clash at The Valley.

The Baggies, facing Lee Bowyer’s side for the second time in less than a week, took the lead midway through the first-half thanks to Kenneth Zohore’s strike.

They were quickly pegged back by Josh Davison’s header but were ahead again less than 60 seconds after the interval, Hal Robson-Kanu stabbing home in front of the 3,000 travelling supporters.

Despite having a flurry of opportunities to extend their advantage the third goal didn’t arrive for Albion, and Tom Lockyer’s effort with 15 minutes to go for Athletic ensured the points were shared.

The result returns Albion to the top of the table following Leeds’ defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Slaven Bilić made nine changes to the line-up from last weekend’s FA Cup victory in the capital, with goalscorer Zohore keeping his place alongside Conor Townsend.

His side were put under some early pressure from the home team with Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher twice curling wide from both the left and right corners of the penalty area.

But with 22 minutes on the clock Albion took the lead. Zohore won the ball from defender Lockyer just inside the Charlton half and ran to the box - smashing home at the second attempt after his initial shot was blocked.

Six minutes later Athletic equalised, though, when a corner was flicked into the path of Davison and he made no mistake in tucking it home from close range.

Neither side created anything of note before the break, however the Baggies were again in front within one second-half minute, Robson-Kanu guiding Matt Phillips’ cross into the roof of the net via a deflection to grab his seventh of the season.

Slaven’s men had plenty of chances to net a third, with Darnell Furlong and Robson-Kanu seeing efforts saved and Matheus Pereira and Phillips shooting wide.

Yet it was Charlton who found the next goal - Lockyer getting on the end of a cross to squeeze the ball agonisingly past Sam Johnstone with just 14 minutes left.

Albion piled the pressure on their hosts in the final period of the game but couldn’t find a winner and were forced to share the points.

ALBION: Johnstone, Furlong, Ajayi, Bartley, Townsend; Livermore, Sawyers; Phillips (Edwards 86), Robson-Kanu (Austin 73), Pereira; Zohore (Diangana 70).

Substitutes: Bond, Hegazi, Brunt, Krovinović.
