Albion 1 Luton Town 0

14 August 2018

OLIVER Burke's maiden senior goal for Albion secured a 1-0 victory over Luton Town and safe passage into Carabao Cup Round Two.

The forward opened his Baggies account with the game's only goal at The Hawthorns, coolly converting when sent clean through just after the hour mark.

It proved enough to see off the League One Hatters, in the first meeting between the two clubs for 11 years, and book Albion's place in the hat for Thursday evening's draw.

Darren Moore made eight changes for the Round One cup tie from Saturday's victory at Norwich City, most notably handing full debuts to Academy graduate Rekeem Harper and summer signing Conor Townsend.

The opening quarter of the encounter flowed in an evenly-balanced fashion, albeit without any clear-cut chances, until Hatters striker Jake Jervis pulled wide when in space inside the penalty area after 25 minutes.

Hal Robson-Kanu saw his neat turn and shot blocked by James Shea before flicking a header off target and then testing the Town keeper with a firm drive.

The Wales international was at the centre of most things and headed another opening wide from close range before Harry Cornick fired wide for Luton just before the break.

Debutant Kyle Edwards and centre-back Kyle Bartley were introduced at the interval and the Baggies went on to dominate the second period.

That pressure was rewarded in the 62nd minute when the ball broke for Burke and he raced clean through the middle to slot home past Shea.

Townsend almost forced a quickfire second, his shot parried by Shea, as the hosts continued to retain control.

And they safely saw out the remainder of the encounter, skipper James Morrison forcing a late save from Shea, to send home the majority of the 10,404 in attendance happy.

ALBION: Myhill, Adarabioyo, Hegazi (Bartley 46), Field, Phillips (Edwards 46), Morrison (c), Harper, Townsend, Barnes (Leko 66), Burke, Robson-Kanu.

Subs: Bond, Livermore, Rodriguez, Gayle.
