Match Reports

Burton 0 Albion 1

26 July 2017

JAY Rodriguez secured a 1-0 friendly victory at Championship side Burton as Albion continued their pre-season preparations.

The summer signing headed home at the back post from Matt Phillips' 77th-minute corner - his second goal in three appearances since his summer switch from Southampton.

It secured the Bass Charity Vase, an historic trophy with a rich history stretching back to 1889, which Albion last won in 2003 and have competed for 10 times since 1987.

Albion named a strong starting XI for what was an open encounter, although several first-team players were involved in a friendly against Walsall at the Banks's Stadium which was played at the same time.

Nacer Chadli came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when he fired against the crossbar following a neat exchange with Rodriguez.

Salomon Rondon saw a free-kick well saved and Matt Phillips watched his effort somehow deflect wide, while Lloyd Dyer should have done better when well placed for the Brewers.

Ben Foster was forced into a smart save to tip over from Stephen Warnock shortly after the interval.

Man of the match Ahmed Hegazi saw his header cleared off the line for Albion in the 76th minute and, from the resulting corner, Rodriguez headed home off the back post.

Substuitute Callum McManaman forced a solid save from Stephen Bywater soon after and there was still time for Rayhaan Tulloch, 16, and Max Melbourne, 18, to appear off the bench.

Albion: Foster, Dawson, Evans (c), Hegazi, Nyom, Phillips (Melbourne 90+1), Livermore, Yacob, Chadli (Tulloch 84), Rondon (McManaman 70), Rodriguez.
