Johnston joined Albion from Rangers for £135,000, then a club record buy, and left for Vancouver Whitecaps in the wake of being sent home from the World Cup in 1978. On retirement, he initially stayed in the game, coaching at Hearts, East Fife, Raith Rovers and Falkirk.
